Well as a layman I thought the LA Times article did a good job of explaining the 737's problems. Maybe no one else read it?

It doesn't appear to make any stupid errors, although there is your typical oversimplifications and spending time explaining things that don't make much difference.

Generally it's pretty good.

As stated a few times in the thread, it can be hard to know what you don't know. But it's not hard to know that what you read in the popular press isn't going to be the most detailed or accurate view.
