I use skype IM to communicate with lots of friends and family. M$ are gradually putting the stuff back they took out - it still works on multiple platforms, and you can be signed in on multiple devices at the time. It's better than the alternatives.

Yeah believe everything you read in the newspapers. Don't forget your tinfoil hat subscription!

Govt agencies are just not up to the level of spying claimed. Unless you think they screw up major projects and can't get your tax return right just to deflect you from the truth?

It’s not the government you have to worry about - big business is smarter than they are, and far more sinister. And so is every criminal whose sole purpose in life is stealing financial information from users.

NO, NO, guys you have it wrong......you need oxygen free string impregnated with silver and coated in Teflon, and it must be specified for bi-directional use to prevent one way calls....the kind that Comcast is so good at.

In my previous life I was a cell phone designer at Motorola.....I know what we could do sitting at the cell site control console......and this was nearly 20 years ago. We could pick a target phone, say a boss in a staffing meeting deciding who to lay off next, access his phone and disable the ringer, and set it to auto answer, then call the phone, and route the call to anyone we chose. Things got more fun when cameras were put in phones. Those of us who knew how to play with that technology kept a piece of masking tape over the camera on our own phones.

The technology to monitor everything done on our devices exists, and is likely being used by the big advertising and data mining companies.....and who is the biggest one in the world? UH, and don't they have all the source code to the OS that runs most phones? Go to your Google dashboard and look at what they admit to knowing about you.....for one, every Google search you EVER did going back to the stone age! Viewing mine reminded me of some classic rock groups that I had found, then forgotten again.

How many people willingly transmit the audible sounds and sometimes video in their living rooms to the "cloud"? Siri, Alexa, Cortana.....that long forgotten X-box Kinect under your TV set......

Two years ago, they gave a ‘cease and desist’ order at work prohibiting such sites as diyaudio. Given the extent of the data mining going on it’s not a bad idea. This computer is considered expendable and never gets used to order anything or even log into anything I’d expect to keep private.

A couple months ago I saw some banner ads pop up here that I wouldn’t expect unless I was surfing porn. Couldn’t figure it out right away. Then I was up at night working on something I was writing - on my other machine that doesn’t get used for browsing but does stay on the wi fi for printing and accessing the music server. That’s the only possible connection - not exactly porn but something that would get one fired at work. And it’s running an old copy of Office 97 not the phone home to mommy and charge by the month 365. Makes me want to go back to pencil and paper.

I find the nuisance thing about online advertising is continued adverts for itemsI have searched for and have already bought !.

We are moving into a fully connected digital world reliant on 5G connectivity.
We will all be ascribed digital identities stored in our phones (reinforced by biometrics), and just about every packaged item or product that you can think of will have a digital identity also.

For foods this means every packaged item will have a digital identity RFID chip attached, and linked to this identity will be a cloud stored, blockchain based ledger record of every growing and processing stage and subsequent record of distribution and ownership.
This individual item digital record platform will also apply to manufactured goods, with the same authentication, track and trace and secure digital payments function.
This per item recording system also enables the next stage in certification/authentication with digital ISO process records attachment.

Proof of concept trial has already been run with wine, a product that is exposed to counterfeiting and consequent lack of trust.....RFID tagging in conjunction with an 'open sense' label/seal means that food products cannot be tampered with or 'second sourced'.
Honey is another industry where it's a crap shoot as to what the consumer is actually buying......disclosure and honesty will mean that the user can buy and consume with trust, a property that is sorely lacking in present times.

This platform extends to every aspect of life including peer to peer payments and smart contracts and will change our world for the better, with trust, honesty and transparency the outcome, something that the world has never had.

Dan.
