Heres a nicely constructed web site on the Titanics radio operations.

Even if ya only have time to review the pics, its worth it!

This telegram gave precise details of the massive icefield already in the path of the ship. The surviving officers of the Titanic claimed that they had never seen the signal. Various theories have been advanced over the years as to why this terrible oversight occurred.
Yes very sad indeed.....

Its too bad they didnt have more advanced type radio stuff back then.... (A loud VOICE MESSAGE coming over the air warning them of the ice might have been heard better i dunno)

A nice rundown of the comms traffic used during the SOS/CQD is here: THE TITANIC RADIO PAGE

As a ham I find it very interesting.

If there was a relay network of the CQD, such as a mandatory policy of relaying CQD/SOS messages to all ships. to the Olympic (and Carpathia) for example, the Olympic would've probably gotten there sooner. A sobering thought in hindsight. It seems to me that there was a very rudimentary method of relaying the distress calls back then. Plenty of ships had heard the message but not relayed it.

But it is all really very academic. The Titanic should've had enough lifeboats and the captain shouldn't have called for full steam ahead, fullstop.

The iceberg warning report should've had priority aswell and have been sent out sooner. It all comes down to the fateful lack of use of the prefix "MSG". Had that have been used the Titanic wouldn't have been struck.

I'm quite suprised at the heroism of the Marconi radio operators who had died at their posts. At some point there comes a time in which sending out distress signals is not going to improve your situation any further. Once the distress signal has been acknowledged by 2 or more ships you should quite literally pack your bags and get the hell out of there. There is no point at that point to continue tapping out while the water is around your waist. Your position hasn't moved, the ship isn't going to unsink itself. Get the hell out of there!

You do know this story?

Did David Sarnoff Work a Telegraph Three Days Straight Covering the Titanic Sinking?

Radio was VERY young. The sea is a harsh mistress and sailors don't embrace new technology. We did learn some from the Titanic. The lessons were loud.
