I remember watching that at the theater when it first came out. It starts out ok but soon takes a turn into Creepsville. I never watched it again.
Gene was wonderful in that one. He raised "Enemy of the State" to a better than average level with a similar role.

I agree it was quite good, but not best. Certainly the best of the money-grab reboots of late... probably half of my enjoyment was relief! I try to go into these things without too much comparison to the original; or else I’m bound for disappointment.
The most recent Alien restored a bit of faith as well.
Best for me has to be divided into classic and modern....

For post apocalypse sci-fi there are several not always mentioned, "Five", "On the Beach", and "The World, the Flesh and the Devil". I love the way the Mad Max franchise turned into an amalgam of S&M industrial. punk, and wrestling culture as opposed to the gross self indulgence of "Waterworld" or the "Postman".

How do you deem Waterworld and Postman to be gross self indulgence? Maybe you're just not a fan of Kevin Costner. On another note I would say most sci-fi / action movies of recent years would all be better movies if they cut the special effects action by about 50% and added in an equal amount to deepen the characters portrayed so we actually have a reason to care about them.
Neither a Costner hater or apologist, but for those keeping a scorecard, I couldn’t agree more with Scott on this.
At least a few gazillion dollars and CG talent was directed at something less mind-numbing than say Green Lantern. At least Ryan bounced back one of my absolute faves in the past 10 yrs - Deadpool - and not just because of the scenes with Morena.

Agreed pleasantly surprised by the mad max trajectory. It didn’t take itself too seriously, and excelled at it.
I read on the beach and watched the film, as well as the 2000ish made-for-tv reboot. The other two were from before my time but have heard of them both and will check them out.
Speaking of made-for-tv efforts, while admittedly not the best display of acting and of course the book’s quality is insurmountable I enjoyed the three part Childhoods End.

Scott- this one I think you’ll dig quite a bit. Personally I thought it was an instant classic.
And sorry all I have to side with Scott here, Postman and Waterworld - alongside most Costner efforts in general - are trash imho.
Last thing he did that was worth 2 hours of my mildly focused life force was A Perfect World.
