I don't want to spoil this thread by being too serious, but I suspect that preference for 'nice' intervals relates to their simple rational frequency ratios which in turn means that any nonlinearity creates frequency components which themselves have mainly simple rational ratios. This means that IMD gets effectively buried. Nothing to do with what we have heard before, just a matter of the properties of integers.

Would an irrational (or even worse, transcendental) ratio sound signficantly worse than a nearby rational ratio? I suspect it might.
