And what did we buy today?
Finally received all necessary parts to upgrade my PC. This is the first time I have made a (half-arsed) attempt at cable management. I decided to move all the hardware into a smaller, but more modern case that I had laying around (Cooler Master N200).

This is a pretty modest build by today's standards, but far, far more powerful than what I had been using for the past 8 years.

ASUS Prime B450M-A
AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (6-core, 12-thread)
Deep Cool Gammaxx 400 CPU cooler
16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200Mhz
USB 2.0 Card Reader

I installed my existing SSD drives (3), HD, modular power supply and RX480 8GB video card.

After upgrading the UEFI BIOS to the latest version, I simply enabled XMP/DOCP to get the memory running at the right speed and enabled virtualization. Everything else left at defaults.

My existing Linux installation booted up instantly with zero issues.

CPU is idling at 32C and stays well below 68C during stress testing, which allows the max boost clock of 4.2Ghz to be maintained on all cores for extended periods.

I am now questioning whether I really need this much CPU power. I also have a new Ryzen 3 3100 and I am considering swapping it in to see if I am just as happy with it. I could sell the R5 3600 and put the money towards something else.

Or keep the R5 because you'll want the speed eventually... Cheaper than upgrading later

My Ryzen is the first machine I have not bothered to overclock. PBS works so well that upgrading to an AIO 360mm water cooler would only net about 2% difference. The Wraith Prism cooler that AMD includes with it is quite impressive for stock, too.

"...Cheaper than upgrading later ..."

I don't see it that way at all. Now that I am up to socket AM4, my upgrade options are almost "unlimited" and prices are only going to go down. A couple years from now I will probably be able to get a used 3900x for peanuts.

On the other hand, I do really like this R5 3600 , and I already own it. Maybe I'll keep the R3 3100 and use it in a future upgrade of my daughter's PC.

Yep I thought I had enough for any chore on a car, but nope. I've got a set of normal torx, Allens, SAE, Metric but no these are bolts that the heads look like a normal Torx driver!

No doubt the madness is designed to make the punter go "oh crap I don't have anything that could undo that, I better take it to the dealer".

Tony.

External Torx. Some bolts on my car use this, too. They work better for automated assembly.
