Hi there, Hope you are all well

I want to buy an extremely high quality bass driver. Im looking for the very best that are available, no price limit.

If you could recomend some manufacturers, it would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

"Best and no budget" probably won't get you far over here...

But let's test that shall we ;) Have a look at the Parthenon, designed by Dan Wiggins of Adire (no longer trading under that name):

You might want to mention actual budgets, otherwise I'm happy to build you a custom one that *is* the best on the world for a zillion pounds. Also where do you plan to use it, what do you want from it (enclosure size/driver size/fr response/efficiency etc), what will you power it with???

haha ... fair comments mate ..

Last time I was on the forum (which was years ago), I remember manufacturers being recommended.

From what I can remember, the prices ranged from a few hundred pounds upto £1000.

I know you can spend more than that, but from what I understand this sort of price range is bordering into the very best. Unless ofcourse you are a zillionair. Correct me if I am wrong though.

Thanks very much for providing that link tho, I have had that driver on my mind since I put up the above post. Could not remeber the name of it though so probably would never have found it unless it was for yourself.

As for the Enclosure size, lets say no more than a meter cubed (which is in my opinion is a tad extreme).

Amp wise, I currenlty have a BK Elec 500 Wrms (into 4 ohm load) panel amp, Am willing to upgrade this though, if neccessary.

Thanks for the help

Short of the Parthenon and up-and-coming Sicko, you could get 2 units of LMS-5400 for a fee. Still available if you put up an ad perhaps (over at AVS forums). Get 4 x 18" PRs. Probably not that difficult to build as compared to deep bass tapped horns. Very low distortion.

You will need very powerful amps though.... and save some for EQ. The pair should be enough to even out some of the modes (esp if you are having more than 1 listening position).

If your room is big, then you need more.

If you are not looking for such deep bass and ~ 30Hz extension is fine esp for the music that you do.... and more importantly you want it to perform good to a much higher freq like 100+Hz, then the Lambda drivers will be good. If you are HP your mains that high, then 2x15" TD15H in 300L tuned to about 30Hz would be good....each side.

Anyway, since budget is not a big concern (and I don't know if you can handle such a project), why not buy commercial?

A pair of TH-50 or DTS-20 would be devastating even in the largest room. They recently installed 4 pcs of TH-50 in Chicago Pier IMAX theatre and with deep bass room gain (well for certain that's a big room there!) the installers measured response down to 10Hz there.

The idea is to get the bass region serious headroom, so you can run it well within specs and get the distortion as low as possible.
Of course this doesn't matter if you only listen to girl-with-guitar / vocal audiophile recordings only. :)

Distortion you see in speakers. (-20dB from fundamental is 10% and its only 50Hz)

on the subject of nonconventional sub woofers such as the parthenon, check out the Phoenix Gold Cyclone!

For a really good conventional sub woofer check out TC Sounds/Audiopulse They are actually the same brands and offer the MOST bang for your buck. Made for cars but I've seen several high end theaters utilizing TC Sounds woofers

www.audiopulse.com should be back up and running by now. products are available for sale thru parts express as well as my self
