This is probably a stupid question, but can BD140 be used as VAS in the P3A with +/-42V rails?

No, the BD140 is spec'd for a Vceo (max) of 80V. It's at its limit with the supply voltages as originally spec'd, +-35V.

I agree. I ended up with MJE350's as they have higher voltage rating. Just one other improvement
(I think!) I made was to remove C6, as the .1uF between the driver bases makes it
redundant (Thanks Wavebourne!)
Have now tried A/B switch to compare P3A's with P101's.
To my ears, they sound identically excellent!
Now trying to get the courage to tear my Cambridge R50 T/L's
to pieces and try bi-amping them...one day...!
