They used an optocoupler to increase the bias in a range of signal level. Nothing special really. The transistor in the optocoupler is used as a switch and brings in another resistor in the bias network. The same as if you turned the bias pot up, but very quickly.
You know, I never did investigate this but ... I wonder if when it switches, does it put a transient on the output waveform?
