Guido - just seen your other reply...

Ferguson used to do that in their TX100 range of TV sets! They had an IR tx IC mounted on the same PCB as the IR reciever/preamp circuit. To get the signal from the local IR TX IC, they put an IR LED on this same PCB, close to the IR reciever diode!

There is just one minor problem that I've noted with this - the front panel buttons aren't very responsive because of the 1/4 second transmit/decode time...

Also, I agree about the extra clock. That's why I didn't like the idea of using conventional multiplexed switches. The VFD is mounted behind a decent chunk of aluminium, so I'm hoping that any noise generated is largely contained...
