Kenwood KR-9600 troubleshooting question

Hi,

I have an old Kenwood KR-9600 given to me by my father. When everything is connected the unit sounds like a bowl of rice crispies: It constantly snaps crackles and pops.

I would like to open it up and troubleshoot however I am unsure of what I should be looking for...

Any Ideas?

You need to provide more info.

Is the noise on both channels when in stereo mode?
Is the noise there when the volume control is at min.?

A unit that old could easily use new electrolytics.

Take the preamp to amplifier jumpers out of the back and see if the noise stops (ummm... power off before you take the jumpers out). If it does, then the source is obviously in the preamp (which would be a bummer, since the amp is pretty simple, and the preamp is fairly complex).

Also, a thorough cleaning with DeOxit would be a good idea, but this does require considerable disassembly to accomplish.

the noise is gone!

Your idea worked! I disconnected the preamp from the power amplifier and inserted a source between the two. The crackle has dissapeared... At least I can use the darn thing. It would be nice if I could get the preamp working any advice ?

If you're good mechanically, get some Caig DeOxit and start cleaning switches and pots. No substitutes.
