However, having worked for a trade magazine publisher, I would *never* 'sign up' with one just to read a couple papers.

(A LARGE part of the trade magazine publisher's revenue is generated by 'renting' out the subscriber lists to -any- interested parties. It's perfectly legal for them to do, and in many cases they are exempt from 'do not call' telephone marketer registry limitations, as are newspapers. Read the CMP "privacy" policy on that website.)
