Default gap pad insulators

i've been seeing a lot of these gap pads used in class D amps and DVD players for the processor chips. they're like sil-pads, but a lot thicker and "squishy". these are a thermally conductive material that is very flexible and they fill gaps a lot better than sil-pads. i was just wondering if anybody has actually used them. i have a few from NERTS'ed DVD players, and am thinking of trying them out in a project i'm working on. my concern is that i see them used for Broadcom processor chips and class D amps, but in the same piece of equipment, they still have sil-pads for the transistors and regulators in the power supply. so does anybody know if there's a reason why these gap pads wouldn't be suitable for output devices?
