Default Testing software different results

I'm testing an amplifier and have a couple questions.

In Arta, I can test the frequency w/ the main frequency testing button (FR1).
Or, I can record an impulse and analyze that. (Record Impulse, then I press F12)

The results are different. Bass rolls off sooner w/ the impulse.
Which should I use?

Also, I get different results in different software. My amp measures better in both frequency response and distortion in AudioTester than in Arta.....
Is that normal?

Thank you.

Quick question - does a loop test of your soundcard also give you different results?
I would assume so, but it's best to check.

Are you using the same soundcard in the two cases?

Yes. Same sound card. It's just my built in sound card on a cheap motherboard, so overall it's not great. But these results are consistent.

As far as the differences between the two softwares, I think maybe AudioTester is smoothing/filtering the signal more than Arta.

I'm still curious why the frequency test (fr1) in arta is different from the impulse response being converted to a frequency response.
Maybe it's my amp reacting differently to the impulse vs the other frequency test.. But which do most people use when they record and post charts of their frequency response?

Hmm, for imp vs fr1 in arta, they are close to the same w/ a loop.

Arta vs AudioTester are different. I haven't looked at the settings much in audiotester yet, but like I said in my last message, I think it's simply filtering the input or smoothing the results more.

I think my questions are answered at this point.

Thanks!

On something like an amp, smoothing should make little or no differences -- there aren't sharp resonances like you'd have in a loudspeaker.

If your amp reacts differently to an impulse than to a sine sweep or spot test, then your amp isn't linear!! I doubt that's the case. Are you watching your level with the impulse response test? It's easy to overdrive an amp with an impulse since it has very high peak level compared to it's nearly zero output energy.... usually, if the impulse is clearly audible, something is likely getting overloaded.

I have always used Arta, IMP mode with sweep tone.
Has always given consistent and reliable results, provided you observe the volume level.
