INVESTIGATION UPDATE:
  1. The source of the initial downtime was found and resolved. It was due to an unexpected knock-on effect from changes made the previous day to ensure we didn't experience an SSL certificate expiry issue in the future. The next day those changes caused an issue during the nightly backup process.
  2. Subsequently, during some housecleaning of the drives, it was noted the OS had been up for nearly two years continuously without crashing or being rebooted, so it was rebooted to blow out the cobwebs.
  3. The OS failed to shut down properly and hung.
  4. Server technicians at our web hosting company attended to the issue, diagnosed the reason for the failure to come back up after reboot, made changes to ensure it would reboot successfully next time.
  5. A second reboot was attempted to verify the changes had the intended effect and ensure a future situation like this would not occur, and the server came back up normally

Things should be fine moving forward - no more SSL expiry issues, plenty of disk space, no more unexpected hangs after reboot, and the cobwebs have been blown out from our server which was, to this moment, doing just fine without a reboot in 2 years.
