Decent chip amp with asymmetric supply (similar to low-fi LM386)?

Hi

I have two sound cards that use the terrible LM386 chip amp for headphone output, and I'd like to mod them with some higher quality chip, if there is one that supports asymmetric supply. Is there one?

Thanks

There is a chip called TBA820M (8pin) which delivers roughly 1W with asymmetric voltage. I remember that it has acceptable sound quality (better than the lm386) but needs quite a few external components, more than the lm386...

TDA1308 if you can still find it... saw a comparison table yesterday... these were also the chips that swung the highest level output

If one can believe the application notes at Ti, most opamps can be used off a single rail supply.

An externally hosted image should be here but it no longer works. Please upload images instead of linking to them to prevent this.

I know http://www.elfa.se/en/
has got TDA1308

TDA1308 is a dedicated little IC for Headphones applications.
I have had the idea to order it, and show my brother
how small a fairly good Headphones-Amp can be made
with modern IC technology.

Philips Datasheet:
http://www.nxp.com/acrobat_download/...DA1308_A_4.pdf

The TDA1308; TDA1308A is an integrated class-AB stereo headphone driver contained in
an SO8, DIP8 or a TSSOP8 plastic package.

Features:
Wide temperature range
No switch ON/OFF clicks
Excellent power supply ripple rejection

Low power consumption
Short-circuit resistant
High performance

High signal-to-noise ratio
High slew rate
Low distortion

Large output voltage swing

As Nordic says, it has high output voltage swing.
Think it would be perfect for 2-4 battery operation.
3-6 Volt DC

lol if you buy too many, send me two please.......... they are like $10 each here.

Supply voltage: +3.0 to +7.0 V
Supply current: 3 mA typ.
Max output power: 60 mW (THD <0.1 %)
Distortion at 0 dB: 0.03 % typ.
Signal/noise ratio: 110 dB typ.
Channel separation: 70 dB
Package: SO8

As you can see in ELFA catalog
( english version http://www.elfa.se/en/ has got prices in Euro )

If buy 10 pieces, you get to pay 15.80.
You will have to add VAT and of course some for transport.

Buying 100 will cost you 80 Euro.
You could then supply the whole of South-Africa, for a couple of years :D

it would suprise me if they could maintain an electricity supply that long.

Gentlemen,

The easiest solution ist to get hold of an elder Acer CD-ROM reader, it contains a Philips TDA 1038, other CD-ROM players from Samsung, contain PT2038, which has same pinout and characteristics.

I used such chip to repair a Noxon2audio internet receiver. I used a small saw and cut out the amplifier part.... it works on 5 volts and has very low hiss.

good luck
