Hi all -

I am endeavoring to put together a list of sweep tubes. I have about 80, not counting different heater voltage variations. You can download the list here:

http://www.pmillett.com/file_downloads/sweep_tubes.xlsx

The list captures basic data like plate dissipation, G2 max voltage, heater specs, and base.

If you have any input, missing types, or corrections, please let me know!

Pete

(Hard to read, but I pasted the data below so you can get the idea)

That was done with the [ code ] ... [ /code ] markup metatags. And of course the dan {tab} characters refused to align nicely, so I wrote a chunk of PERL to read your data, parse out the missing fields (a lot) and the tabs, and then mono-space enough (' ') padding to each to cause them to align. Then I ran a few more times, "pruning" the width of the alternate heater column, and trimming down the word "Compactron".

Hi Pete,

I don't see the 6CM6 or 12CM6 on your list. I don't know if they count, but in the attached Sylvania datasheet, the 6CM6 and 12CM6 are described as "miniature beam power pentodes designed for service as general purpose audio power amplifiers or vertical deflection amplifiers in television receiver sweep circuits." It sounds as if Sylvania intended the 6CM6 for service as a sweep tube. The data includes design-center ratings and typical operating conditions as a vertical deflection amp "[f]or operating in 525 line, 30-frame system as described in 'Standards of Good Engineering Practice for Television Broadcasting Stations, Federal Communication Commission'. The duty cycle of the voltage pulse is not to exceed 15% of the scanning cycle."

I agree "sweep" could be horizontal or vertical.

But when I sweep the floor, I wave the broom left and right.

In the TV set, the Horizontal sweep is a MUCH bigger tube than the Vertical sweep. V-sweep tubes are small and boring. Pete's going for the BIG "sweep" tubes, that threw the electron beam a foot each way 15,750 times a second, +and+ jacked-up 300V to 30,000V, +and+ heated the 30KV rectifier filament.

The H-sweep tubes were about the biggest tubes ever sold to ordinary people. Oh, the 6L6GC has higher ratings, but is in fact a H-sweep tube made for non-switch duties. And the H-sweep tubes were made in HUGE quantity. There were far more TV sets than 40 watt PA/HiFi amps. The H-sweep tubes ran too-close to ratings so there used to be huge stocks of replacements (more than V-sweeps which often lasted forever). Of course those stocks are down due to Pete Millett and Pete Traynor and Geloso and many many others co-opting H-sweep tubes for big audio use.

They appear to be close equivalents to the 6V6 family of tubes, don't they?
Best regards!

What about the PL523 by Telefunken?

or the EL300?

Thanks everybody for the suggestions. I have added a bunch of types and will update the file tomorrow.

The Russian types are difficult because they aren't in most of the data sources I'm using. It's hard for me to identify which are sweep tubes. But if I have type numbers and can find datasheets, I can add at least some of them.

Pete
