Has anyone built the "Jenzen Illuminator"

As the title says.

I am looking to see if anyone has built this design and if so was it worth it? What other DIY speakers are in the same realm? I have seen the "Elsinore" and have considered that design for over a year. However, I like the Illuminator because it is not like his other designs using odd hard to get drivers like the Janzen tweeters or the Elsinore that also requries special waveguides to be made.

I am looking for more opinions on the sound of the Illuminator design and if there are any other plans that I might look at.

Saw both of those threads. I did search prior to posting and nothing there gave me the indication that either OP built the Illuminator specifically or anybody had other then Troels himself.

I did look at some of the other plans suggested in the second thread you posted but they did not interest me much. I am looking for a large imposing 3+ way speaker that is well documented. I have found some other interesting builds but the threads are large and mostly undocumented hot messes.

James

Not exactly. I would like to see the design laid out in one place like Zaph's designs the Elsinore or the frugal horns. I would prefer not to have to go through up to one hundred pages of the design process and random off topic postings that is all. I appreciate the time required for such things but am not interested in spending my time reading things not pertaining to the final layout or crossover and box design.

Todate

here are some snaps of the project to date
i must say that from looking at the plans that troels as submitted to the current state has taken a lot longer that i had thought it would
also if you dont have good woodworking tools and a workshop i would suggest that maybe another project may suit a first of builder

I have approach the build a little different than the plans in as much as I wanted a common box and not split into two
this has presented a few headaches in getting the mid section built
I sort of thought that when I looked that the module out of the main case it looked like the ships out of starwars dark forces

i have used 16mm mdf for the inner sectoins and walls 18mm for front and back panels doubled on some inside panels and 32mm for the base

also plan to use 32mm for base which will house crossover assemble
I will use 130mm to raise the cabinets not the 60mm that is suggested as my ear hight when seated is around 1030mm from floor level

Selectation is SB Acoustics elements for my project
woofer SB29NRX75-6
mid SB17NRXC35-4
tweet SB26STAC-C0004

these have similar T/S to those that are suggested
I will take some measurements of the T/S specs using Dayton woofer tester
then use in box measurements from the Dayton omnimic program
final enter into Jeff Bagbys sim program and see what we come up with

i am still a long way off completion but not put off as yet
wintermutt
I am still to complete that mtmw combo that we discussed some time back I sort of get side tracked to easy

cheers speedie

Hi Speedie, I can relate to the getting sidetracked too easily  Might explain why a) I have so many projects, and b) why none of them get finished :p

I'll be interested to hear how this turns out. I've been eyeing off a few of the SB drivers, and was thinking myself about a three way project (yeah another one).

Have you adjusted the cabinet for the SB drivers? I'm guessing the stepping on the original was for time alignment with the specific drivers. I guess SB compared to scanspeak will be likely to have similar geometry considering their links :)

I don't understand. You asked about Troel's design, said you'd checked out the Elsinore, and obviously have knowledge of Zaph's projects ... and then you spend a lot of time and effort working on cabinets (look nice, btw) that mimic Troel's Illuminator but use totally different drivers with your own crossover. Troel's designs (and Zaph's, and Tony Gee's and so on ...) are a synergy of drivers, cabinet and crossover ... simply imitating the cabinet design with different drivers and your own crossovers will not be an Illuminator.

from Troels web site he has used quite a few different drivers and crossover componentry so one could assume that the other variations arent illuminators either by the way Troels wasnt upset with me using SB drivers

i like the look of his box design and wanted to play around with other drivers

i will post some more snaps when completed
hopefully get some measrurements in as well
cheers speedie

got a fair bit of progress on these boxes
on 13/9/2013 (black friday) had a few mistakes happen
the router stop moved about 8mm the wrong way and i ended up being to deep in the woofer section of one box
this mistake took about another hour or so to rout out the correct depth washer and glue into place
talk about bad luck

i have used a hand plane to get an even surface on the external sections of the box joins
i am in two minds as to either piano gloss back the entire boxes or to veeneer top and three sides then gloss black faces

i used some aliminium angle to hold the corners in place when torsion strapping the boxes for glueing
i also knock the joins with a rubber mallet to set them in tight

all of the intrenal wadding and wiring are complete so next thing will be to complete the pedistals and mount them so i can start on crossover development

some more snaps for your viewing

my workshop equipment is emotiva and the small two way are another project that i completed some time back
