Rockford Fosgate Punch 150hd Amp
The pre-amp section of these amps should the caps be replaced on these sister boards before using in my system regardless of whether they're presently in good condition ?

seankane 19th April 2013 01:16 AM

Yes because they eventually all will leak. Once they leak they destroy the HBPIM board and or make it very difficult to repair. The traces get eaten up by the electrolytic fluid that leaks from the caps.

Thanks champ, I'll get the caps changed ready for my install...

Be careful, the solder pads on those boards are VERY sensitive to heat.

Is it better to remove the board to make these changes?

seankane 19th April 2013 06:54 AM

I would stand the amp on end and do it. You can remove the board and it might be easier but the vias and solder pads are VERY heat sensitive and you risk damaging them. Chip quik will aid in removing the board.

The capacitors are not very difficult to change with the board installed.

Thanks seankane. Do you use through hole components or keep with the SMD?

seankane 19th April 2013 05:32 PM

I usually retain the SMD component, but sometimes if the solder pad is damaged I will use a through hole and solder to the trace.

The key is to change them before they

Thanks again. I just got this amp in. Went to the forum and it was the first post! I looked and it was the correct problem too. This is a great forum.

Seankane I don't mean to takeover this thread but what would you do with this board? Possibly a 200 ohm axial resistor from pin 15 to pin 8 of the TLO72 and 10uf from pin 8 to ground?
