Also, changing the R-C timing components changes the frequency. If you vary it too much, then the transformer will either saturate if too low a frequency is chosen, or suffer higher core losses if a higher frequency is chosen. Also, you would have to change the number of turns on the tranny. Since you're repairing and not designing, you pretty much don't want do anything with the tranny, so I would concur with testlab on disconnecting secondary-side components to see when the problem goes away.
