EI transformer orientation

I have an EI transformer that I am using in a solid-state preamp. I'm about to mount it in the chassis and I'm wondering which way I should orient it. In other words wich side should face the pre-amp circuit?

It will be about 4-5" away and I must cut a hole for the bottom of the transformer to pass through, so I need to get it right the first time.

Thanks.

I had it all on a piece of plywood when I was testing it and had no hum. I then took it appart to build the enclosure.

I just read that most of the magnetic field is projected out the exposed sides, where the end caps usually go. In this case that is the top and bottom. It seems that it doesn't matter which way it's rotated as long as the laminations are pointed at the circuit.
