By planet 10 - What happens to the numbers when you eliminate all the Windows anti-virus programs & all the virus, trojans, etc from the list.

Omitting all searches that include the words "virus/trojan" you lose about 10 million hits.

Security is a two ended stick. An OS can be MADE secure or hardened (windows), but not be that way "out of the box" (windows again) . The fact that it is this way natively makes it a social engineering target (windows). As windows is still 90% ....

[blues are microsoft OS'es]
If you were a punk virus- trojan coder workin' for the russian mob :D , would you bother with the 10% ?? Also, you would assume that 10% is WAY more knowledgeable (a bad target), considering their choice in a operating system.

Windows XP "out of the box" is horrible. "remote registry service" "remote assistance" and a few other scary services are on by default.. what a gaping hole. Xp's firewall won't block any outgoing communications , and IE sucks. So , after a day , most XP users are hijacked by an active X control and either get redirected or end up in somebodies "botnet".

being the main target (90%) ,Microsoft countered this with server 2K3 / Vista -IE7/8. This was good , but they did not anticipate the negative reaction of forcing the public to learn basic security protocol and releasing a "BETA" . VISTA .. ALL of IT - is a beta .. leading up to WIN 7.. SHAME on redmond  rip offs!!!

UAC in win 7 is just the right balance , not too intrusive , but sufficient to surf endlessly with a daily IE8 crash (Warez site - porno).

NO Antivirus software here !!! :D

I have never used a antivirus program , between 2001 - 2009 , only 1 event(2002)...I downloaded and launched a infected pirated item , it cloned itself to all 6 of my HDD's (hard to get rid of). This was my fault , I learned .. moved on. IE has been compromised (hijacked) 100's of times in the same 8 years , and this was the only route the bad guys still had with me until I found Chrome.

Now I can visit any site , even the ones google identifies as "evil" , the worst that will happen is the "sandboxed" tab on chrome will freeze and tell me to close it.

ever notice how softare is getting SOOOOOO beloated

But we , and open source developers , can fight back.
Some examples ..

combined with win7's native burning ...
burrrn.net - The home of Burrrn and Mr QuestionMan » Downloads At a whole 2megs ..
and - ISO Recorder v 2 at 775K !!

I can do all of NERO's work without installing 371 megs of B$.

Other "LITE" win32 goodies... all under 10megs

Privoxy - rock solid network proxy server (used 3 years)
Privoxy - Home Page

HFS - port 80 web server , too many features to mention.
HFS ~ HTTP File Server

AC3 filter - movies never sounded so good.
AC3Filter
B S player - At 12megs - it can use ALL codecs , winamp DSP's , SPDIF , all filetypes .. used it for 4 years now .. flawless - even dualscreen HT use.
www.bsplayer.com

I also use winamp , paint shop pro 7/8 , NFODIZ ,Winrar , Microangelo (icons),O&O HDD defrag ,Chrome , foxit PDF (3 megs) Foxit Software - Foxit Reader for Windows
Frontpage/word 2003 , LT spice (of course) .. ALL my main 3'rd party programs open every filetype ,run in 100ms, take no more than 100meg space and NEVER fail (many years of use and abuse). BTW , all these perform flawlessly with win 7.

We will undoubtedly have more, but i doubt it will be as bad as Windows.

Windows was written as it was a grass shack in Fiji (you mean there are supposed to be doors & windows in those holes in the walls? What's a lock?)

UNIX was written from the get go, with doors & windows, locks & bars. Open Source underpinnings mean the code gets poured over for holes... which are quickly fixed quite quickly.

I'm not sure I agree with this. Alot of the vulnerabilites are actually apps and not OS, and no one spends as much time or money in plugging the holes as MS does. I used to be a security analyst, and its quite surprising how many holes are out there in linux land, but no one writes exploits, Im sure its the same for MAC. Their day will probably come if it becomes the prevalent OS. Some how I tend to find a lot of MAC users fanatical MS bashers and have never experienced anything bad about their MAC.

The iPhone has the potential to become quite a botnet:
BBC News - New iPhone worm can act like botnet say experts

I think the serious crackers are focusing their efforts on the new generation of phones coming out, especially when they're dropping announcements challenging them like "...our system is secure from hackers..." like Apple did on a CBC interview

I've had quite a few sites try and "r00t" me with browser exploits (there was one Chinese electronics site that was cracked and dropped different code for Windows, Mac and linux, depending on the detected OS), but so far none has been able to do anything but drop php code in my /tmp folder, which I have cron wipe daily anyhoo.

Linux is very secure because even if there is a hole, most of the users aren't careless about it and package updates are crazy fast.

Cheers!
