Please look at the following links. (Greatly simplified, but very good illustrations for this conversation)



The first is a single-ended output stage, similar to the output of the Aleph amplifiers.

Source Follower

The device has to either turn more off or more on to modulate both the positive and the negative part of the signal.




This is a push-pull output stage.

Simple Push-Pull Follower, with Distortion

One device for the positive part of the wave, another device for the negative part of the wave.

Devices in push-pull configuration act as each other’s current sources, if you prefer to look at it that way. The considerably higher efficiency (thereby higher distortion) of push-pull topologies, which is the prime reason to use them, remains unexplained.
