Papa’s slot loaded open baffle version #2

Project update- I bought an ACN crossover from a diyaudio member. With help from another member I was able to set up the crossover for about 150hz. I'll add some sockets to the low pass resistors and try some lower crossover values and see how they sound. Low pass is out of phase to the High pass.

There's a noticeable difference between the ACN and an older opamp based crossover I was using. Thanks to Papa and the Diyaudio members who helped.

Project Update- I switched out the Fostex FE206En FR drivers for a pair of the Lii Audio Fast 8. Now there's a bit more energy and vibrance with the sound.

A few weeks later, I updated the FR amp from an F4 to an F1J. The sound became smoother and creamier. F2J and F3 are in the planning stages.

I’m currently using a pair of the Lii Crystal 10 baffle-less driven by my F2J monoblocks.

They are remarkable. Hands down the best sounding fullrange I have tried in either front horns, open baffle or otherwise. I’ve played with Fostex, Lowther and Tang Band drivers.

The F2J always brought out the best in all of these drivers.

I found the Lii used with only a few hours on them on US Audio Mart for about half price.

I’m using a B5 for crossover duties. Still playing with it. It’s currently set to about 300Hz.

The bottom end is two Acoustic Elegance Dipole 18 per channel arranged push/pull baffl-less driven by Hypex amps.

WG45,

Very nice work and thanks for the updates. We really get very few reviews so yours is very welcome!

Cheers,

Greg

Pass Open Baffle

If you do some reading and searching, you'll find more info. Papa wrote an article about the "big" open baffle speakers with 6? woofer drivers. That speaker has much more written about it. It can get a bit confusing figuring out which speaker people are commenting about.

The pair I built in the attachment are much smaller with one woofer per speaker. I went for the WAF. (And it was cheaper.)

The F2J is one of my upcoming builds. I'll use Papa's gift pair of Semis for it. I'm curious to compare the F1J to the F2J.

I agree that the Lii Audio drivers are a well kept secret. I went for the Fast 8, since they would slide into the baffle without much work. It would be fun to try a 10" FR. (Papa did say I was going to need multiple baffles.)

Mine are crossed at 150Hz. I'll have to try a higher value and see how it sounds.

Very cool!
Thanks.

I think in a way the slot loaded woofer behaves similar (but not exactly) to Ripole loading and as such should not be crossed over higher than 150Hz.
The Ripoles also use a dedicated trap circuit, but it may not be required here. Only listening and testing will tell you.
Member Rudolf is a good source regarding Ripole info.

$595 a pair for Audio Nirvana Super 15s is actually very good.
They easily beat all speakers up to $1000 a pair.
Above $1000 they beat most but not all.

How do you come to that conclusion? They look quite unremarkable on their spec sheet and decidedly low tech for the money. 1mm of x-max won't get you far in an OB. Also the driver is in breakup throughout its operating range.

Very nice. I guess that these should be active/biamped since the 8" or 10" fullange will be much more efficient than a single 15" bass (which will struggle a bit if you want to play loud).
That said, I remember that Nelson has also tried a passive 1st order crossover with this OB (just a big 20mH inductor and a capacitor). Anyone else tried it?

Amazing work, Botte !

Very interesting. My friend Mauro is driving them in OB with a 45SE and a B5 together with 18" woofers with very good results

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I'll take it easy when I try the higher frequency crossover value.

I have only tried the crossover at 150Hz and I'm very happy with the current sound. Being a fearless amp builder, it should be worth the experiment to see if 150Hz is the right spot or if higher is better.

I do use the external LX Mini/ACN crossover and the drivers are bi-amped. It's no problem to fiddle around at low volumes with the woofers.

It's odd. My expectations of AN drivers were not great, but I ended up
deciding that they were much better than they had any right to be.
