It also depends on the speakers. Less efficient speakers will mask amplifier noise whereas speakers that are very efficient will allow low level noise to be heard.

I have had good success with my amplifiers and high efficiency speakers. I twist all my wires together with returns and pay attention to minimizing loop areas. I believe that the lower the noise level of the system, the more enjoyment I get from listening to it.
