LX-mini Crossover Article

We measured 2SK170BL at 1nV/sqrtHz at 1mA.
2SK117 (=2SK209) was 1.26nV/sqrtHz.
For me close enough.

And we use lots of 2SK209GR as followers, amongst others.
Performance on par with 2SK170s as far as I am concerned.
Especially if you use 2x 2SK209GR in parallel to "replace" 1x 2SK170BL.

So apparently Nelson doesn't know you are using lots of them ? ;)

A more productive approach is to design a circuit to your satisfaction and share with others. Harping on a single comment made is not helping the thread....

I find the 2SK209 to be 2x or so the 2SK170 in noise. It will have higher noise due to less gm just the way it is but it doesn’t really matter, the quality of the noise is good not like the Sanyo popcorn stuff. The Toshiba are so darn consistent a shame they are doing away with them. I really like the 209 nicer idss then the BF862.

Nelson doesn’t do SMT yet. When I am Sea Ranch full time maybe he will.;)

The 2SK209 has Yfs of 22ms at 8mA, against 30mS of 2SK170BL.
So about 0.7x.

Which devices are you referring to, 2SK3557 or the like ?
Are they not now OnSemi ?

Nelson does not have to do SMT. He has enough leaded stock.
But if you and I do a project with obsolete unobtainium, we'll be accused.
For me, at this moment, there is no better active part than 2SK209.
BF862 needs cascode, and is already EOL (no stock at DK or Mouser).

Just for fun we are making a dual 2SK2145 follower, DIP8 dual opamp pin out compatible, and adaptable to SOIC8.
But will take a while.

How did you find the J1/J2 Idss match in your 2SK2145 (Y grade?) ?
I vaguely remeber that Dimitri was not too impressed.

;)

Cheers,
Patrick

And you should get him to try solder SMT once. ...
I think NP prefers evaluating parts by himself, has already played with smt parts and found the experience not so enjoyable. On absolutely necessary case, he can easily order soic part on adapter populated by automatic machine or Pass Lab tech. But as you stated, he still has enough through hole parts to play with.

Courtesy of Wayne, I have a small inventory of SMT parts, but as none of
them are particularly better than the Toshibas or LS, I just fall back on
my large inventory of those......

Sanyo 2SK772 the other ones you mention are quite good, slightly better then the BF862 for noise as I measured but also low voltage. I haven’t measured the 2145 for matching, just put them in and they work. The Toshibas are just so nice they work and don’t ever seem to fail.
