"WHAMMY" Pass DIY headphone amp guide

Following Meldanos link it comes to approx 49 euro for a stereo pot. I guess you need a power supply as well (though any cheap one will probably do). Maybe you can tap power from the Whammy (not sure what the voltage/current requirement of the muses is).

Looks like a nice solution, considering that ALPS pots are fairly pricy.

I tried the Muses 8820 in mine and really liked it.

I have both the Muses01 and 02 to try, but I need to lower the rails to 15v before inserting a $50 opamp.

If you are wanting to try different opamps, there are plenty to experiment, and I'd love to hear everybody's impressions. The standout for me, so far, is the LM833.

I just wanted to drop a note expressing my sincerest thanks to Wayne and 6L6 for this project and build guide. I finished my WHAMMY over the weekend, and I was immediately overwhelmed by the quality of the sound. I am currently demoing a headphone amp that retails for close close to $1000 USD, and my WHAMMY (at 1/5 the cost) is easily its match and more.

As to the build guide, this is only my third full build and everything went smoothly from start to finish. These instructions are very clear and easy to follow for those of us just starting out with DIY.

I built it stock in the Hammond case with an AD823. Listening so far with some AKG/Massdrop K7XXs.

Any thoughts on another op-amp that might match well with the K7XX's? Not that I'm looking for any improvement, but I'd love to see how some different op-amps compare with these headphones.

Thanks again to everyone who has contributed to this project.

Im curious, the 8820 is listed as having max 16V operational voltage, same as the 01 and 02. Did you use it with 15V or 17V supply?

hifi_cat - this circuit does use a positive (7815) and negative (7915) regulator. Stacking two positive regulators also works, though the final quality will always be up to the implementation of the design instead of the overall topology. There are many ways to solve the problem. :D

silasmellor - 17.5v ; I was willing to run the risk of overvoltage with the more inexpensive 8820. It sounded very, very nice.

Hi SL6
I'm intrigued that your favoured choice of opamp is the LM833.
I've had my Whammy running now for a fortnight or so and as a rule of thumb it seems to me that if using an fet opamp capacitors c2/7 are best left unoccupied but conversely with a bjt opamp something like 33pf here helps.
I wonder what you use with the 833? I've got some lurking around here and will give one a spin.
FWIW my personal favourite is the OPA2107 - noticeably cleaner in this application to my ears than the OPA2604.

I finished my build with OPA2604AP and Fairchild Mosfets. Beautiful sound with 300 Ohm Sennheisers HD600, completely without hum and noise. Thank you Wayne and 6L6 for this amp!
