Well the good news is another member came through and sold me some for considerably less than $122.
The bad news is they were still considerably more than Nelson's $10.

I noticed some of the 2sk1530:s I have have do have a rather steep Id vs Vgs slope so here is a quick comparision between a semisouth jfet a high gm 2sk1530 and a high gm irfp240. (stated for delta 1.4<->1.6A)
(note: for the mosfet theese are pretty much the highest measuring parts out of a few hundred of each.. so likely almost as rare as semisouths)
Seems also the crss and coss are not so terrible either for the 2sk1530 but it hard to compare the plots in the lower voltage range against the semisouth.
Might try them out in a J style circuit, have not looked at thermal stability tough.
