I've heard various things about this line of amps/receivers (SR-, TA-, and PA-)

They are class A. They are class AB. They are class D.

They are overrated. Nelson Pass hated how Nakamichi implemented his designs.

They are great, but the first models (SR) had inadequate power supplies.

The TA- line sounds great, with subpar build quality. All the rest sound like consumer electronics.

Since they have a lot of potential, but were mishandled by Nakamichi, they are great for mods.

I can comment on a couple of these.

They are Class AB, although the original units had a pretty heavy bias. I was there when they played with the bias on the first production piece, and they
were very intent on making it sound as god as possible, discovering quickly
that higher bias was the ticket.

I don't have any information on what later pieces were biased at or what
the build quality might have been.

I thought Nakamichi did a fine job implementing the circuit, keeping in mind
that they were contractually obligated to not build product in the same price
category as Threshold, so they operated within a budget.
