I'm looking at a installing a fully integrated home automation system at my home. I want to be able to access audio and video files located on a central server, access CCTV cameras, control heating and air conditioning, electric gate closers and alarm systems.
There are commercial products out there that go some way to achieving this but none that i recall that include all options (not in the UK anyway) so i'm thinking of how i might go about building one.
My thoughts are that i would use ethernet with various I/O controllers located around the building each with it's own IP address - Any areas that i can't easily cable i can install a wireless bridge. I think i have seen adverts for ethernet based controllers, but cannot recall where - I googled and found some industrial PLC controllers but they were too expensive for my application, any URL's or other information for a suitable controller would be greatly appreciated.

Embedded (industrial) PC-compatile CPUs are getting to be cheap enough to consider as controllers, if you can find them as surplus on eBay. 486 should be fine for digital and analog I/O.
I/O can be done with microcontrollers over an RS485 twisted-pair network, controlled from a central controller like with the Circuit Cellar HCSII (which has now gone open-source).

http://www.cc-concepts.com/ doesn't appear to be selling items anymore, but does still have schematics and firmware for various HCS-compatible modules, if you're inclined to do some pc board layout.
