Good HF performance
Easy to get
Easy to pick with a machine

Small! Can be hard to solder by hand and also be stressed by heat
Maybe negative properties due to it's small size


Most of our signal sources (through the whole chain) consists of SMD, (ADC, DAC etc).

I prefer to hold a low profile in this debate because I don't know at all the pros and cons when we talk the sound quality.

I suspect that many people have strong feelings in this matter but most of the negative parts comes from: Don't know anything, can't be good! Don't strangle me for this ;)

Just use two solering irons! One works sometimes also. It's hard to burn a SMD component.

Sorry, that was a typo. I meant PPS film, a plastic. Corneil-Dubiler makes the PPS SMT caps I am using; I'd provide a link but I can't seem to get to Mouser. Digikey sells the radial Panasonic ECH-S series, PPS, and according to Harry decent sounding.

SMD's are small which is good if you want to pack stuff closely together.

For resistors in particular, it may be a problem that they are small as they may in some cases be modulated by the audio signal ...

Actually I don't think SMT are that hard to solder if you have the flip-up style magnifier. Shrink packages are a pain, but SOIC are large enough to individually solder the pads and even 0603 are not that bad.

PPS = Polyphenylene sulphide,
Has properties fairly close to Polycarbonate.

PEN = Polyphenylene naphthalate
