Sony PS-X9 - replace varistor VD1221?

Sony PS-X9 - replace varactor VD1221?

There are quite a few VD1221 varactors in my Sony PS-X9 turntable. They have a bad reputation and I was wondering if I should replace them with two diodes in series or with NOS VD1221s which I have. Could I even use the two diodes trick to replace them in every position/ situation? (Varactors must be around for a reason :confused:)
