Hi folks

I needed two 10000uF 25v caps to finish a project and ordered some from ebay, the same supplier I have used four times before and each time I got Rubycon BXA caps, as shown in the picture on the listing:

5Pcs 25v 10000uf Radial Electrolytic Capacitor Assortment Kit Set 18x35mm VP 701828672409 | eBay

However, this time the sent me ChongX brand, which I see is listed as lowest tier crap on several forums.

So now I have a board that has 3x Rubycon 25v 10000uF caps on it and needs two more, but I'm very reluctant to use these ChongX ones.

Has anyone got any experience of using this brand of caps are they okay or junk?

Ooh, when dd RS start with the free shipping? Last time I bought anything from them was a bag of TIP41As aeons ago.

Yeah, I normally try to avoid using ebay for components, but I had ordered these caps four times before (to repair computer PSUs) from this seller and got the Rubycon BXA every time, as I just needed two caps to finish a project, I figured why not, oh well.

Thanks for your kind offer, I'll let you know.

It depends on what you're using it for. I use Chongx or Chengxing caps for PS decoupling and they are fine. They run in 70C+ temperatures. I also use them as voltage doubling caps. I've had two failures. Both seemed to be the polarity was marked backwards. I also use JCCON, Carli, Tenta, and Jamicon. Just avoid anything that says Nichicon KMH. 450V caps at 420V and they all failed (vented).

I would rather use Chengxing then "fake" Nichicon or Rubycon. :)

And Ian: Are you sure they were actually Rubycon? I've gotten enough fakes (but they work fine).

Also, Rubycon BXA caps are far from rubbish.

But those caps in that eBay listing are definitely not genuine Rubycon BXA caps.

The listing shows caps with really low quality sleeving, rubber seal with "rings", and the vent on top is like "X". All of which are not found in genuine Rubycon caps.

Rubycon BXA series has 160V-450V rated caps, there are no 25V models in that series.

I don't see how "ChongX" caps would be basically any different from counterfeit "Rubycon" caps...

Sounds like you need to get an entire new batch.
There are only a few vendors that I will buy smaller caps from on ebay. The worst ones are the ones that also sell doormats, costumes for cats and such, have to stick to the specialist sellers and then only a few of those are worthy.

The larger filter caps all come from the legitimate companies as suggested.

Yeah, I might just bite the bullet and replace all of them, I'll have to count how many, but probably 12-15, so it won't be all that expensive, but very annoying.

I do but things on ebay, but usually from European suppliers and usually only things I can't easily find elsewhere.

What I do buy from Chinese sellers are things like hardware - phono plugs, heatsinks, screw terminals etc. However, i also got burned with with something you would think was a safe purchase - solder. I bought a big reel of solder cheap from China on eBay and the stuff is awful, it won't melt at the usual temperatures and if you crank the temp up to 450 so it does melt okay, it just doesn't flow or stick anything like it should, it's garbage basically.

I think if you buy anything off eBay you should accept that is is probably fake. I was at jacmusic.com the other day reading the lengths that sellers worldwide go to to sell fake tubes, to the extent of laser burning the Telefunken diamond in EI look-alike tubes and repainting. Fake can be OK quality, but it is not real or what you wanted.
