Reducing value of inductor

Can you effectively reduce a 4.4mh iron-core inductor to 3.0mh by unwinding the right amount of turns? My thinking on this is that you will still have the same amount of iron in the inductor. When they make an iron core inductor, is there a ratio (iron to wire) that makes the value up, and by reducing only the wire and not any iron, it will only foul up the inductance of the inductor and thus can not be done correctly?
