Which brands do you prefer? And a second question: Which brand offers potentiometer, that I can complete disassemble for cleaning service and maintenance?
By all rotary switches this isn't a problem, but by the potentiometers, that I know (Alps, Piher, Vishay), unfortunately this is not or only partially possible.
Thank you very much for your advices

I haven't forget. Nevertheless best thanks.
Because the URL of the weblink here will be suppressed (bad idea) and only the headline of the weblink is displayed, you overlook this company. At the fifth position after "Switchable Attenuators" this brand is mentioned.

Khozmo Acoustic from poland looks very fine, many thanks for this advice

Who knows more about new brand names about www_jancocorp_com?

Someone else on this forum recommended these minature stepped attenuators. I bought one and the performance and tracking are superb. They are also tiny and very inexpensive:

SMT Resistor Step Attenuator 50K Volume Control on eBay (end time 14-Nov-09 19:31:05 GMT)

I'd never buy a pot given the number of high quality low cost stepped attenuators on ebay ;-)

this could be very intersting, because the size seems like the commonly Alps standart potis. Unfortunately I cannot find the brand name in this auction. Do you know the brand of this 50K Step Attenuator?

I listened to a $60 10k TKD conductive plastic that my friend lent me, and it really degraded the sound. Too much hype.

I do, however, enjoy most rotary ladder steppers. Especially the ones with SMD-resistors.
are you shure, that the potentiometer is the real reason therefore? Please note, there could be many other reasons for degraded the sound (place of potentiometer, the not right choice of the potentiometer-resistance, not appropriate circuit topology, interchange together with parasitic cable effects and many more).
If you post your complete circuit diagram arround your potentiometer, I will let you know more exactly.

out of a bare CS4397 DAC, in and out of the stand-alone TKD, into a lm3886 gainclone.

10k works with it. all of my other pots are 10k.
then you use this circuit:

If wire from the out of pot to the "RB" (1K) and PIN10 is very short, indeed pot is worse. In another case (ie long wire) the quality of pot isn't the reason for unsatisfy sonic quality
