Not if you keep the transformer away from the preamp.
The benefit is the startcurrent. When using a toroid transformer over 500VA you CAN have problem with the start. Sometimes you can use a relay in the primary winding...... not so with a normal transformer.
The negative is the electrical field as nbcd said. Risk of influence from the transformer. (But not if you keep it away from the preamp)
