Do you recommend this as my first scope?

I think he means second hand !

protos

Lots of places in the UK for second hand 'scopes ...

For the same money you could get an old but much higher spec instrument.
If you like I can post some links to second hand dealers (UK) or you could try eBay.
If you want new I doubt if you would find cheaper than E260.

Dave - about to buy a second hand tek 'scope !!

No reason not to buy second hand, as long as it's from a reputable dealer who will guarantee operation and calibration. For reference, I just paid about what you're considering for a used Kikusui, 6 channel, delayed sweep, 100MHz, with probes, and calibrated. It replaces my old Tek, which is sadly starting to fade away.

Last year I bought a perfect second hand Tektronix 2235 oscilloscope for 255€.
It's a 100MHz scope, and it have a delayed sweep option too.
It may be a bit old, but it's working perfect.

So it will be a good choice to go for a second hand scope, you can find many good ones in the UK.
Over here in Norway the second hand marked for scopes is a bit small, but I have seen advertisings for UK second hand stores for electronic equipment who are selling scopes.
Maybe you can try one of them or alternatively post a thread where you ask for a second hand scope.

Here they are ...

I have not bought anything from any of the above sites so I cannot comment on them (yet). The prices look 'typical' of UK prices (compared to US prices) ie $1=£1 :dead:

There are a few existing threads on diyAudio recomending different brands / models if you need to choose something.

IMHO 60MHz / analogue / 2 channel will do most things for a reasonable price.

Re: 1500 Euro for a 100MHz scope?

An old second hand Tek is usually a really good scope. But be warned, if you buy second hand check that it is in good working order. All these scopes from 20 years old and later contain a lot of hybrid (thick film) circuits. Tektronics don’t have these anymore. So when one is broken you are lost.

When a scope of Tektronics is not current anymore, special spare parts become quickly rare. That's a pity :bawling:

TEK Thick films

exactly this point has been made on the ham radio newsgroup -- a number of sellers do offer a 5-day right of refusal however.

My TEK 7704a cost $77, and after I sold the 7M11 plug which came with it (why do I want to test munitions timing circuits anyway?) the net cost was about $20. It's in almost constant use. You can't even get a theatre ticket in NY for that amount.

You can buy a NEW Tektronix TDS2014 4-channel, color, with FFT for about that much.

Just bought one of these... ...showed up today. I paid $1800... ...if you can beat the $1800 I'll be impressed.

for $1000 you can buy a TDS1000 series, 60Mhz with FFT... ...and the TDS220 series (Same as the TDS1000 mono, and TDS2000 color) are going for around $400 to $500 on ebay.

The TDS series scopes are set up to do a recalibration on their own, just push a few buttons and it's automatic... ...so, other than a periodic check calibration shouldn't be an issue.

I bought a TDS1002 in February, I paid 1300€ for it.
It's a very good scope, but I'm pretty poor now, I'm just a student and don't have very much money, but it was worth the price.
It's a scope I'm going to use for many years, and hopefully it will be useful in future jobsituations

So today I have two good scopes, a Tektronix 2235 and a Tektronix TDS1002.

One thing about Ebay... Check your item every 30 sec for the last 5 minutes of the auction. someone tried to snacth my scope by 1 dollar the last minute of the auction. But I typed like mad and got a new bid in for 1 dollar more with only 15 seconds to spare and thwarted the would be theif.

That's called sniping. It has become an artform and sport. The motto of the sniper is "bid late, bid once". I've seen items go up 10X in the last 30 seconds. I've seen multiple people put bids in in the last 10 seconds.

As long as the auction is open, bids are fine. Snipers aren't doing anything illegal. The auction doesn't belong to you if you don't have the highest bid at the end-why do you associate bids that are later and higher than yours with stealing???

Losing when you wanted the item is agravating. Ways of countering sniping is to bid your true max. Snipers usually put in one bid and don't have time for a follow up so it's usually their true max bid. So if you have a higher max you still win. If you'd pay more and you depend on the proxy bids, you should put your real maximum.

Or you could put your bid in late. You did, so you basically sniped it from the other guy. Fun!

Really there is no advantage to bidding early, since the only bid that counts is the highest at the end unless you put your true max as the proxy bid.

I've won a few things by bidding late, and lost even more auctions. I've beat sniping by having higher proxy bids. It's part of the game.

There's an interesting concept I haven't seen yet and that's the nuclear snipe. Sometimes someone will put in a REALLY high bid, since they'll only pay an increment over the next highest bid. Now suppose two people do that...booommm... That would be fun to watch.
