I have and amplifier very similar to the one shown below (please forgive the disproportionate pics). We need to replace it because it has an awful hum and hiss. Can anyone recommend a (hopefully much more modern) replacement? Please and thank you.

Interesting bit of kit.

What do you want the replacement to be able to do?
How many mics do you want to connect? What about MP3 players or laptops?
Will it be driving speakers? What sort? How many?
Got a budget?

Right now it only pushes 4- 15" Holmes speakers. So, just that. We have a really old powered mixer that runs the mics and two additional speakers. We're planning on upgrading in the next year or so, so we'd like to spend as little as possible to adequately do the job.

church? As pointed out by Chris, you should provide a much more detailed account of what exactly you want to do if you expect any useful advice. How big is the space? How loud does it need to be? Exact model of loudspeakers..... etc. etc...

Easiest solution is to have a reputable local consultant/contractor have a look at what you have. If they just try to flat out sell you a complete set of new kit, politely decline. If they bother to fairly assess your present equipment and suggest improvements/additions, bite the bullet and fork out some cash.

Be present while they do the installation/wiring, ask questions. -> learn from the professionals

It sounds like this particular box is being used just as an amplifier. Line level input, speaker-level output.
Anything with a couple of hundred watts per side at 4ohm will do the job, I expect.

If you're connecting mics or anything else to it, now's the time to say.

We're planning on upgrading in the next year or so, so we'd like to spend as little as possible to adequately do the job.

If this is the case, find a contractor ASAP!!! They will help you find a suitable, future-proof product, that will be useable after the upgrade as well. You will save money, time and grief. It's also good to get a quote for that future upgrade, then you have a basic idea how much cash you need, and start saving/collecting. Why wait?
