projector lens design

I have recently acquired a bargain projector from ebay that works great. The thing is I would like to mount the projector at the back of the room 50 ft from an 8 ft screen. I priced a lens from Sanyo at £2000 +, hmm so much for that.
I love a challenge and could easily make all the mounting tubes/brackets but where can I find the information to calculate and purchase the lenses? The only adjustment I want is focus, as the projector would never be moved. Is this a fairly good starter project? Has anyone got any designs that work?
