Marchas Procesionales - ROS Sevilla, Vjkoslav Sutej (1995)

Today is a holiday in Spain. We celebrate 40 years of the Spanish Constitution, the most successful of the eight we have had, since that first of the Cortes de Cádiz of 1812.

What better to celebrate than listening to genuinely Spanish cult music. Now, a gift from my Sevillian friend Julio Belda.

Zarzuela - Wikipedia

Zarzuela (Spanish pronunciation: [θaɾˈθwela]) is a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporating operatic and popular song, as well as dance...

There are two main forms of zarzuela: Baroque zarzuela (c. 1630–1750), the earliest style, and Romantic zarzuela (c. 1850–1950), which can be further divided into two. Main subgenres are género grande and género chico, although other sub-divisions exist.

Zarzuela spread to the Spanish colonies, and many Hispanic countries – notably Cuba – developed their own traditions. There is also a strong tradition in the Philippines where it is also known as sarswela/sarsuela.[2] Other regional and linguistic variants in Spain include the Basque zartzuela and the Catalan sarsuela.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Jewel of the crown. You NEED a VERY good sound system and A LOT OF WATTS or speakers with very high sensitivity (very high DR). Very careful if you use headphones!!!!!!!!!!!!

Test passed. I have been careful and I keep the eardrums. The police have not shown up.

My second system:

PC -> ODAC -> AV Marantz SR 4500 -> KEF Q100, all tweaked/modified by me.

Win 10 Pro 1709 64 bits, very optimized to play multimedia.

KEF Q100 5.25" coaxial speakers, true sensitivity of 85 dB/W/m and minimum 4.7 Ohms

Marantz SR4500 A/V Receiver HT Labs Measures | Sound & Vision

205marantz.3.jpg

This graph shows that the SR4500's left channel, from CD input to speaker output with two channels driving 8-ohm loads, reaches 0.1% distortion at 100.4 watts and 1% distortion at 114.6 watts.

Into 4 ohms, the amplifier reaches 0.1% distortion at 128.2 watts and 1% distortion at 158.8 watts...
Note: the modern AV, cheap or expensive, do not have this beautiful graph. They sound very good with films but music... It was the cheap model but it has speakers Pre Out like the expensives.

Back in the 1960's my father was a member of The World Record Club and one offering was an LP by The Modern Jazz Quartet. This particular album was titled "Collaborations" and had Laurindo Almeida as a guest soloist. I recently bought the CD. Just wonderful. Their version of the slow movement from the Rodrigo guitar concerto is arguably the best recorded........likewise the Bach.

After the party, the hangover

Ataúlfo Argenta, the mythical director, one of the best off all times. Pity of the cover photo for tourists. Only the bull and a bullfighter are missing, but the recording is VERY GOOD.

Another recording that gets a lot of 'airplay' is the slightly unusual Boult edition of the Messiah (Ward, McKellar, Bumbry and Sutherland). It has relatively sparse instrumentation and is played at a VERY slow tempo. This was in marked contrast to the very large productions and fast tempo then current. (Back in the '70's I was playing the LP version and the girl friend of my housemate with a fairly wide experience of classical music asked if the turntable was faulty!!) Like the MJQ my boxed set was World Record Club . It what I grew up with and love and now the more conventional productions all sound like the conductor is on speed.......

[Spanish] Jaime Aragall

To me, the best Spanish tenor is Plácido Domingo. Second the master, Alfredo Kraus (perfect technique, maybe the best technique but cold, without emotion) and third Jaume Aragall. And yes, I do not like Josep Carreras, very inferior.

Problem with Jaume Aragall: very few recordings!

The italians Mario del Monaco y Franco Corelli (technically the worst but the one that more emotion and credibility transmits) are very good too.
