As a young man, Ruben Gonzalez played with Cuban Dance bands in the day when the American Mafia controlled most activities in Cuba. Come the revolution, he took a back seat. Many years later, Ry Cooder loaned his 77-y-o fingers a decent piano. Could he still do it? :confused:

After two weeks practise he loosened up the old fingers and made his Debut album. A masterpiece! Introducing Ruben Gonzalez. :D

Excellent pianist Ruben Gonzales except that he never took a backseat.
He played with the top orchestras in Cuba from 1941 until his official retirement in the late 80s apart from 7 years prior to 1961 which he spent playing with a famous orchestra in Venezuela. He recorded his first solo album in 1975. In '87 he became band leader of the Cuban All Star orchestra.
