I've lent out my "Sweet Soul Music " book by Peter Guralnick, so I will do my best to recall the details from memory.
"The Dock of the Bay" was written by Otis Redding while he was recuperating from an operation on his larynx to remove polyps that had grown there. After having a gruelling two years of non-stop touring, and having had several surgeons refuse to take the risk of removing the growths, for fear that he would never be able to sing again, a New York doctor, who was a fan, did the operation with a valuable shotgun being the payment for the task. Otis was not even allowed to talk for several weeks, and not sing for months. It was in this period of not knowing if the operation would be a success, that he wrote a dozen or so new songs, The Dock of the Bay being the one he was most keen to see become his first number one hit. On the very first day after he got the okay from his doctor to sing again, he went into the studio and played this to his band and manager, they where not keen on the song, but he insisted, so they did a take of the song that morning, in the afternoon they did a just a few other quick takes of other songs.
The following day, Otis flew his plane off to do an interview, but on the way, he crashed, killing himself and several other passengers. The song was posthumously released, and as he predicted, became his first number one hit.
I hope I have remembered all the details correctly (must get my book back!)

07 - At Home He's a Tourist - Gang of Four - Banned from BBC & later lost support from record company (details below).

song was banned because they refused to change a lyric for a performance on the BBC. Then later a song critical of the Falkland Island War, I Love a Man in Uniform was banned causing drop of record company support even though the were on of the hottest bands in the country at the time. The record company then turned their support to Duran Duran.

13 - Fine and Mellow - Billie Holiday - Heroin, alcohol, jail time, sexual abuse, used and taken advantage of by the men in her life, and probably her share of racism during that period as with many other of the greats of that era. You can see she is a bit high on heroin in this great performance from her late days in 1957. A few years later she was gone in 1959 sadly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SThGnrorGW8

14 - Spastic Autisticus - Ian Dury - Polio at age 7 after which he was sent to a ' special school ' where he was bullied, and sexually abused.
Wrote the song in respose to ' national disabled day ' introduced in 1981 calling it patronizing
and insensitive created by naive and arrogant do- gooders.
The song was banned by the BBC who had no idea that Dury was disabled claiming it was offensive.
