Audiomobile (MASS series) are very good, but extremely expensive drivers. Several other suppliers (Blueprint, Lambda, Stryke, TC-Sounds) use the same 'Venezuela' cast frame, but without the chrome plating or other bells and whisles that inflate the price, but offer no performance advantage.
The best band for the buck these days are either the Shiva/Tempest from Adire, or the DVC 12"/15" from PE. These drivers use a Carbon Fiber layer epoxied to paper cone. As a result they are much stiffer than any poly cone driver, so far fewer cone breakup associated issues

For general ideas, you should download some subwoofer enclosure design software. A basic, easy to use program would be WinISD.
http://www.speakerbuilder.net has the plans for a Dayton DVC sub. If you check out http://www.adireaudio.com they have a DIY section, and they also suggest designs to use with their drivers.

If you go with Adire woofers then download the LspCAD demo available from the Adire site. It comes preloaded with the parameters of their drivers
If you use other drivers and have a version of Excel try using Unibox it's probably the most accurate of the freeware programs. WinISD has some inherent modeling issues especially with accuracy around 30Hz
