Hi guys,

I would like to build something like the Harbeth M40.1, because everytime I heard it, the sound convinced me.
Harbeth Monitor 40.2 – simply-HIFI.com

At the moment I try to decide, which is the best tweeter to pick.
The M40 has a (custom) seas tweeter with a small waveguide.

The closest might be the seas T25CF001:
SEAS T25CF001 (Tweeter 1", 6 Ohm, 200 Wmax)
So, it has low distortion and the waveguide causes a slight, constant beaming starting at 2 kHz
The specs are good, but not outstanding. The price quite high (here around 125$)

Alternatives I found so far:

Sica 90.28
SICA LP90.28/N92 TW (Tweeter 1.1", 8 Ohm, 120 Wmax)
Similar beaming. a bit higher distortion.
Price around 60$

Wavecor TW030WA10
Wavecor TW030WA10 30mm Textile Dome Tweeter with Curved Faceplate 8 Ohm
bigger size. higher beaming to the hight frequencies. Good distortion.
Extended low range. Around 80$

Wavecor TW022WA06
Wavecor TW022WA06 22mm Textile Dome Tweeter with Ferrofluid
smaller size. Good distortion. Less beaming in the hights. starts beaming at ~3kHz. Extended low range. Price around 60$

Do you have Eperience with any of this tweeters?
Or maybe even compared some of them?

Thank you for your opinion and advice.

Regards!

If you buy the Harbeth approach, you buy metal domes:

Soft domes are OK, but a bit Spendor, IMO.

So, IMO, you buy the H1147-06 27TBC/G

Alan Shaw is certainly a speaker genius. Harbeth Loudspeakers Factory Visit - YouTube

So is Joachim Gerhard. He sincerely advises against ferrofluid. Sonics by Joachim Gerhard cabinets and kits.

Three ways aren't rocket science. SEAS-3-Way-Classic

But better than most things.

You could do better than Harbeth in regard to choosing a more appropriate (smaller diameter) midrange driver. If you would like to "clone" the sound of a 40.1, then you should be aware that this is more a matter of a voicing approach.

Hello Lojzek,
yes, good points!
For Midrange at the moment I'm looking for a 6,5" Speaker.
It will not be a 100% clone for sure. I just try to go for an similar concept with a similar target curve (maybe also power response) and a similar housing.

Good evening System7,
good to hear something form UK, the home great classical speakers!

I actually own a pair of the seas 22tff, which are used in the spendor boxes.
I like it a lot and it is currently running in my 'M40'-Concept test.

It works fine. but i crossed it at 2200 Hz, which is actually to low for this driver. But this crossing point gives a better power-responce and sound better in my ears; also there is a little to much power from 2,5 kHz to 4,5 kHz.
Thank you for the interesting links!
Why would you go for Metal? The M40.2 has a 25mm textile with ferrofluid.
Of course, if I could have something better (and cheaper), I would prefer it.

Thanks a lot so far!

Hi Darakon,
You could roll your own in regards to a small waveguide like tweeter. I recently completed a large standmount that was patterned in the Harbeth/BBC approach. The tweeter I used (although one could do better) is the Scanspeak D2604/ 833000 in a Monacor waveguide that was improved by filling the rear cavity with epoxy.

Best,
Rich

Hello,
Harbeth is using actually a lot metal tweeters. Especially for smaler series.
The seas T25 is still a preffered option. But maybe, I could have something similar or better for less money.

Hello Rich,
wow, great work! How do they sound?
Scan-Speak is a good idea. High quality, fair prices.
I will have a look through the scan speak tweeter range.

Thank you guys!
