Hi,
Pano is right, and I prefer the natural bass of a well-made OB to any slammy boom-boxes by far... but of course, this is subjective.
Sure the AE drivers are expensive, but they are also good. Especially so if one decides to go passive, that narrows choices down a lot.
With the right recordings and a lot of power and a quite large baffle, the AE Dipole 18 can move a lot of air, can have an in-room response well into the mid-20s, and can play pretty loud (my meter says up to 110 dB at listening position with Jonas Hellströms bass...it´s freightening...). Also low-tuned bassdrums (Jacques Loussier Trio, Satie) are reproduced very convincing, but without any artificial overhang. Even artifical bass lines, dub (Nordup) or electronica (Trentemöller, Terje Isungset) sound very good, but it´s just that, sound...
All the best
