What makes a speaker sound muddy?

I remember my first amp I built myself in 1980.
It was only about 30 volt rails.
I found it quickly clipped before I got a decent loud output from it.
I found I had to go up to around 55 volts to get something that had clean headroom for my needs.
I also found I needed full range speakers to get that clean sound too.
Rather than mess around with crossovers I just found the widest band speakers I could find.
