Over the years, I've been able to enjoy building systems using a mix of different horns, including:
- Altec 811 and 511
- Yuichi 290 (similar to TAD, see pic with matching bass horn I built)
- Iwata 300Hz (see pic with dual 18 inch AE dipoles in OB config)
- Azura 340Hz (see pic with Altec 15 inch bass cabinet)
- Conical 400Hz (see pic)
- Altec Mantaray (see pic in grey cabinet with Altec 416 woofer...my own personal system)
The Jabo was chosen as I had trouble sourcing the Azura 340.
A friend uses a Jabo with his Altec A5 VOTT bass speakers, which I built....so I already knew how good this horn sounded. (See pic)
It is reasonably sized to suit most rooms without being too large....and performs very well in that critical range of 500Hz up to what ever (depending on CD).
I also like the look of this horn. We had extra pearl/sparkle added to the paint, which makes the white look silvery. Very nice.

I think the iwata 300 was probably the nicest sounding...it's unique shape meant nice room filling sound, clean. The Azura is also very nice, as the Le 'Cleach flare is superb. The Jabo is still a lovely sounding horn....so I would put these three horns quite close together. (I've not yet had a chance to listen to the current Jabo horn with the bass, as the drivers are still on back order from AE).
I find these fibreglass horns are nicer than the Altec bi-radials (511 and 811)....of those two, I like the 511 more than the smaller 811.
The wooden Yuichi is a good horn....perhaps not quite as smooth....but then it's very heavy, so there's no coloration.

The aesthetics of the Iwata-Dipole are very cool and would fit a modernist decor. I understand OB bass is really hard to get right but dual AE-Dipole-18" look like a best effort design. How did it sound? Did you have digital DSP for low bass?

I used MiniDSP for the bass...but only had a moderate amp to test this system. The owner was going to use Ncore amps.
I added about 10dB low shelf gain at 30Hz.
The bass output was very good....tight/fast/deep. The quality of the AE driver is exceptional....heavy and great looking.
I used passive LR2 xover for the horn....approx. 700Hz. We used beryllium 2-inch drivers from Radian, which provided that classic "bell like" sparkle. Not cheap....but the system proved to be world-class in sound quality for a very moderate investment.
I offer CAD CNC plans for both horns...the Yuichi 290S and my own designed bass horn using Altec 416/515 or similar.
The CAD plans for the Yuichi also include the rear mounting plate...though you need to craft the square-to-round section manually. I use auto filler for this. The CAD plan also includes the fins. The CNC makes the large curved cut in 1mm increments...so you still need to plane/sand.
The bass horn is very heavy. CAD/CNC makes the job easier, though woodworking skills required. Ports on the side allow for cabinet tuning. I even CNC'd a 1/3 replica in fluted cardboard.

Yet, I'm wondering how a simpler 2-way solution of an MTM configuration with the TD10Ms, a good 1" compression driver/horn combo (SEOS 12 say, with a 1000hz xover point) would fare against your more complex approach? You will have to augment the TD10s anyway with subwoofers, right?
The MTM approach is one I'm planning to take.

Your construction is fabulous. All of the projects you showcase are great, and well executed. Your choice of the AE drivers is a good one too, I just hope they are not held up too long. That has always been an issue with AE.
Like ElecXover, I'm also curious if you considered other, possibly simpler implementations? I'm not a proponent of any particular type of build, but John at AE always contends that the strength of his product is super low inductance, and the ability to play very high, and cleanly. Did you consider building with, say, a 15" TDM?

Hi Alex....the two way is a good option...in fact, this project was originally designed that way with the TPL150, crossed around 1,500Hz. The client opted to add the Jabo horn.
Most of my personal systems have been two way...Altec 416 15-inch bass, with moderate sized horn....love it.
Finally got the AE drivers....plugged in using the snug rubber surrounds.
MiniDSP crossed at 750Hz, with 7dB low shelf gain at 40Hz.
The bass is tight and deep...very happy. No cabinet resonance.
I'll test the horn with MiniDSP also....just to compare with my passive xovers.

great speaker , quick question : do you run both 15" up to 700 hz or in a .5 crossover configuration ?

For clarity, they are TDM 10 inch woofers, not 15's.
I run them in the same config up to 750Hz.
I spoke to John from AE about this very question. I could have added the different 10 inch woofer for lower frequency...but that would have meant more complexity and a separate amp. When John knew we were using active bass, he thought the dual TDM10's would work fine....which they do. The drivers are extremely heavy and very well made. The output is excellent given their moderate size.
