if you want to build an 290 (not S, but the question is generic) for a 1.4in driver (like 4594nd) how would you design the end bit (throat etc)? Is it ok?

A smaller throat does present an opportunity to improve the transition between the compression driver’s own exit angle and the 45 degree horizontal throat angle in the A290.
The Radian 850PB for example has a wide 16 degree exit angle, so the transition should be made as smooth as possible. To this end I do offer throat adapters with very complex internal geometry to reduce the effects of the abrupt physical change in the flare geometry in the throat. To machine the adapter requires a two piece assembly so that I can approach it with my CNC machine’s ball nose cutter.

For DIY I can share the design or solid model, just email me at Joseph_crowe(at symbol)Josephcrowe.com

Thanks

I'm just starting thinking about it, so in 1 or 2 years perhaps
Otherwise, I found a link to an archive on a french forum, thanks to his member for pointing this:
Wood Horn
I didn't know it has been "saved"
:wave2:

Sorry I might have misread your post. You said about CAD file.
I have the pdf/2d old drawing and the 'web archived' site.

Did you find the CAD file though?
thanks

Hey guys.....sorry for the very late late reply....
The 290 horns will NOT be done unfortunately. I fell out with the manufacturer. We had an argument, he would not refund me, and he didnt finished the horns and blah blah blah. It was a mess.
Also in the meantime I build a HOUSE :) so everything was on hold.

Fortunately I can continue now, although with a different horn. I just dont have the nerve to continue for now with the A290.

I bought a XT1464 horn, some JBL 2451J drivers, and Im now in the process of making a 2235H substitute Prototype No2. Box is 200L vented. tune depends on measurements of the woofer.

The measuring equipment should be with me end of next month, work permitting (and house requirements)

Little background on the woofer. To buy a 2235H in Europe is almost impossible, and if they do pop up, the price is ridiculous. You could buy a pair of TAD 1601As for that.
So...Im trying to build my own substitute. Different spider, treated back of the cone, custom voice coil (have my doubts that it will work and I just might go with original voice coil) and I decided to up the weight to 110-115 grams per assembly.

In about 2 weeks ill be at home, and will try to build at least 1 box, so I can do measurements. 2451J will be in my hands in about 3 days.

I would appreciate it if mods could change the thread name to Moded 2226H with 2451 on XT1464..... or something like that :)
Then I can edit my first post and put some links there to where it starts.

Thank you all for understanding.

Danny

P.S.> whoever wants the files I have, just drop me a message with your email. The CAD is unfortunately only 2d in .dwg format, but I do have a .stl file with the shape. All you have to do is add curved sides, which is easy.

A little something. Tested 1 cone for treatment. Think I overdone it. 3 layers, yeach one added cca 6.7grams.
2226H data sheet says Effective moving mass 98g. If I get this right, the actual assembly weight is 85.5g. On other 15" woofers I have seen that the air load is about 12-13grams.
Right now I am at 106g without airload. That would come up to 118g which I think is a little too much.
I only have 3 voice coils and 2 cones left which are not modded but are not original JBL. Believe these are McKenzie

So some goodies arrived.
The DATS V3, with which I played a little bit and a set of JBL 2451Js. I must say, no matter how many pictures of the drivers you see, it will never prepare you for the shock you get when you handle them. Massive, heavy, build like a tank.
I opened them up to see the diaphragm state. No cracks I could see, no damage, no corrosion. One of the screws holding the + wire is about to give up, so I didn't tight it too much. Hope it will survive. The foam on the back cover is undamaged, and is not dissolving, that is a plus.
I should be home over the weekend and perhaps start playing with woofer measurement in free air. Want to build a small closed box to measure Vas properly.
Any box size will do or does it have to be specific size?

Thanks for help.

wow nice!!! good luck!!

So another little update. The second modified driver, Mms is as standard driver + 10grams in the cup, evenly spread around.
Now have to build a small box to measure Vas with DATS.
Until now, Im satisfied with the results. Enclosure will be build soon, at least a pair of test enclosures with about 200L volume.
