JBL Open Baffle & Horn speaker OKOB

I like the idea of nearfield ripol subwoofer in small spaces and where neighbors are concerned;

Never heard ripol, nor slobs.
Think both get pretty big (stacking) also if wanting high enough level an low distortion.

I've never heard a ripol either, but in theory I like the idea of a nearfield sub.

If your main speakers are 2m away, and your nearfield subs are 0.5m away, the sub can play at -12dB relative to the mains, for a similar subjective SPL.

That seems like a huge advantage.

Many variants of OB or pipe have LF cancellation at large distances from the source, normally seen as a bad thing or sub use, but for nearfield use = not a problem, actually a benefit. A nice way to have subs and also have happy neighbours.

Two years and som changes later.... :)

TAD 4002 on the 2360`s.
JBL 2220 upper bass, JBL 2227 lower bass.
JBL 2405 playing backwards.

DEQX HDP3 as DSP.
Musical Innovation 2x15w class A amp for horn.
Midgard Oberon 4.1 for the bass.

Tweeter just added with the horn, with a 0,5uF capacitor in series.
22uF capacitor for protection on the TAD 4002.

With 0,5uF cap 2405 start rolling of at about 9khz.
Can`t really say to much about it, maybe som ambience is added :)
Helping the 2360`s beaming over 10khz.

Edit: Tested now on same song with tweeters on and off, there is a little difference, more air in the top with tweeters.

Sorry for late reply!

The 2360 imaging is very good. The idea with 2405 backwards is as Ambient Tweeter.
Filling in the area >10k where the 2360 start beaming.

One of the 2405 diaphragms got broken :( they are old.
So got a pair of JMLC 1400 and Celestion CDX1-1430 instead.

Also have worked with crossover in DEQX and got it down to 500hz between woofers and 2360.

Here is schematic of mye diy amplifier.

It is quite inefficient. I have to use an 8ohm resistor on the speaker output to get it sound good with my speakers.

I think this will bring about 2w to each speaker.....
It is enough for normal listening :)
Gain is also quite low.

Afraid of blue LED`s? I use 1Mohm in series with the blue LED`s and it`s quite ok.

The goal of the amp was building something that need very few parts.
The chokes cost some money though....cheaper to build FW F2.

On the positive side the chokes bring down the temperature.

Nice. I bought some Lundahl chokes to build something similar but you beat me to it!

@oks81: Your earlier set up is of interest to me as I have plans to combine horns and OB. I have some Joseph Crowe ES290 biradials and below them I’ll be using some AE Dipole 12” woofers (up to 4 per side if needs be). Fostex T925A to play above the ES290s. So I was pleased to read your comment that the OB and horns work well together.
