Hi guys,
i got a pair of 4310 and a pair of 4412 last week, which both need a little bit of love to look fine again...

What if already done:

  • repaired all 8 Tweeter/Midrange potentiometers
  • removed all dents in the tweeter protections
  • ordered new surrounds for the 128H-
All drivers are in an awesome condition, no scratches no dents but the cabinets..

Both pairs got painted black.. well this is what i thought first but know i`m wondering about the 4310:

The black finish of the 4310 looks not really good, you can see and feel lots of brush structure. On one bottom side i tried carefully to sand the black finish away. With P240 i sanded through the black topcoat and through a white primer until i reached wooden coloured material. I was expecting some nice walnut veneer but the layer i reached under the primer is just a completly structureless tan surface?! I first thought i directly sanded through the veneer and reached the chip board but its not the chipboard.

So what kind of finish do i really have here?! Was there an ex factory Black Version of the JBL 4310?
I first thought i got that rare grey/white version and the white color is no primer but the old finish but the baffle is also painted black and thats the original colour.

And what would you do now? There is no veneer i can refurbish.. Should i just sand back the surface and repaint it black? Or completly sand down to chipboard and reveneer it with a nice walnut veneer?

I`m gonna sell the 4310 so i would love to know what you think sells best!

And i will upload a picture of the different layers of paint..

Sorry for my bad english and greetings from germany!

They got overpainted too. I will again try to sand down to the walnut veener (i think its still visible through the Paint. If i have success - fine. If not, i will reveneer them. Maybe with swampoak and a high gloss finish.

But first they get new surrounds and a listening sessions!

Hi guys! I refoamed the 128H-1 and both are working fine again. Had a little bit of trouble with the glue syringe.. the needle popped of and the glue.. everywhere.. but at least not on the cone (as you can see).

I kept on sanding down the first 4412 and this is how it looks like:

As you can see the overall veneer is still very stained and not really smooth. The pores are filled with black paint and i`m not sure how to move on now. If i keep on sanding it will look like the corner (without black paint pores) but i`m afraid to sand through the veneer destroying it..

Don`t know if i can live with this stained appearance if i could maybe had the chance to remove it.. :D

What do you think?

"leave it stained and with black pores!"

or

"sand it down until you get a clean and smooth paint free walnut venneer!" - with the risk of destroying it...

Best wishes from germany!
Kai

Try using a green 3M scrubby pad with paint thinner and a light touch to see if it will remove the paint spots in the pores, rubbing with the wood grain. Try a test section on the bottom of the cabinet first to see if the thinner will discolour the veneer or make it lift (by thinning the veneer glue).
I would NOT use steel wool for this as the fine steel wool particles may become airbourne and go through the port into the voicecoil.

I suggest the "green" stripper rather than the old methylene chloride stuff, which dries too fast. Also the auto paint store has gray abrasive pads which are less aggressive than the green or red. Third, just stop and call it good when it isn't working and find a stain which will mask the leftovers. Sometimes the gel version works when some concealing needs to happen. Too bad Watco doesn't work for everything.
Not a fan of Minwax products. Varathane used to be better but both are on the same display at Lowe's these days so who knows?

Hello all, my first post here on diyaudio! I just joined the site due to the fact that I too was looking for an answer to this question- I recently purchased a pair of 4310's which I found on facebook marketplace for $30!! They have a beautiful (IMO) gloss black finish. The finish appears to be factory to me, it is WAAY too nice to be a home job and there is no sign of overlayment or anything that would hint that it was done aftermarket (but I'm no expert.) I have included a few pictures here to show you. Hope someone can answer this for the OP as well as myself, since all the pictures I can find of these online appear to be either the woodgrain or gray finish. Thx!
